Aeronautics industry appeared in 1923 in the Somme. Born in Méaulte, Henri Potez brings home his aircraft manufacture that year. Almost 3,000 people worked on the plant, and 2,000 aircrafts were created until the company was nationalised in 1937. His legacy is still alive today, since after many evolutions, the Potez manufacture became… Airbus !
Current standard bearer of aeronautics in the Somme, the current Airbus plant employs more than 1,300 people and specialised in assembly of Airbus’ aircraft noses.
Around the plant, a network of outsourcing companies specialised in aeronautics and machine tool. With more than 20 members, this network organised in the PHMA cluster (Pôle Hydraulique et Mécanique d’Albert, i.e. Hydraulics and Mechanics Albertin pool), employs more than 2,000 people and has become an important part of the aeronautics field in the Somme.
At the end of the 1990s, local bodies signed up for the building of an aero-industrial platform, high-performance tool for business use. Since its opening in 2007, Albert Picardie airport enables Airbus to ship its large items towards Toulouse assembly plant on its cargo plane, the Beluga.
Around this new equipment, the Poppy County public body develops a 100 hectares business park, directly connected to the airport, and dedicated to host industrial activities, logistics and services linked to aeronautics.
